So it doesn't make the noise when it's still cold?? Had a broken rocker arm on a small block once that sounded like the end of the world, but definately made noise cold or hot. Was a 'clacking' sort of sound too. I'd start by taking off the valve covers and givin it the visual inspection. Good Luck!
