If I may, it could be the sock.

I was told when i did my swap to have the pump sit just a tad higher than the fuel outlet, place a 40 micron filter prior to the pump and a 100 after. I believe this is correct.

My pump is actually a Pierburg Pump. It is not as noisy as the Walbro and tons more reliable ( from what I have read). The Pierburg is stock in older Mercedes that run gas or diesel. but they are higher $ than a Walbro also.
