It's a Standard Operating Procedure for most Fire Departments to remove the lettering when they take the truck out of service. You don't want someone to buy it up and go masquerading around as a Fire Fighter with your department lettering all over the side. It's the same for retired police cruisers. They pull off off or paint over any of the official identifying lettering.
