I started driving everywhere this way several years back.
Also, when I'm approaching a stop light I try and predict when everyone is going to start rolling again. Start applying the brakes to time it so I'm still rolling when the traffic starts moving again. The goal is to use the forward energy to its full potential. I've gotten pretty skilled at it. Many times I'm rolling up at just the right time to not even have to apply the brakes.
Here is the rule of thumb ;
You want to move forward with the least resistance. Allow natural terrain to aid the forward movement. Avoid using the brakes as much as possible - roll up to the intersection rather than accelerating and braking between each stop light.
I've improved my CRV mpg an average of 3 mpg.
