Looking at Malibu's information, and if the heavy half was designed to circumvent emmissions requirements, I think a heavy half would be a great option for you IF you were under strict emmissions requirements.

But a heavy half is just a mid-point between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton pickup, if towing and weight capacity are your primary concern, I think stepping up all the way to a 3/4 ton is a better option.
