Most people change out the master cylinder for a 2 piston type, even if they keep drum brakes and don't add power. This is done for safety's sake so that if there's a failure there's less chance of loosing brakes completely.
I've got a '54 in the shop right now that we used the Classic Performance kit on. Dual piston m/c, power booster, wheel bearing conversion and disc brakes while keeping the 6 lug wheel pattern so you can still rotate your tires.
