Just a note, make sure you replace the voltage regulator at the same time always. These work in unison and can trip you up when trying to troubleshoot charging systems...
I'd still be very surprised if your "new" alternator is faulty. I would check your ammeter before taking it back or whatever. Redneck tricks are only as good as they are called
your meter won't lie to you!
