Biggest thing I would be concerned with is the vin. Does the new cab come with a free and clear title? Are you prepared to now title your truck as a 72?
If not I would consult your local MVD "enforcement officer", not the clerk at the DMV office.
It can get sticky or messy. or not, not sure on your state's rules on this.
