And even more strangely enough the longer cable with the piece on the end ended up being the right cable for my truck. I still don't have the parking brake dialed in right, even with all new parts, but its better than it was.
I've been sitting on the shorter cable too long to return it, so I'm going to stick it in the Paying It Forward thread in case anyone needs it.
