If you don't use the restrictor, you're intake will get warmer, raising the temperature of the intake charge. This is the opposite think you want. If you are creative, totally seal the passage off on both sides to keep the intake cooler. You will notice that on all serious performance intakes, this passage is non-existant. I seal mine off totally to keep the air charge cooler, and to keep the underside of the intake cleaner. Oil will carbonize when it touches the hot intake, just take the stock splash shield off of a stock intake to see what I mean.
