Re: C50 dump truck information
Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes, the remote pump driven via PTO all makes sense to me, but I have a leak coming from the Chelsea PTO; what would that be? The flywheel should be dry and I figured it was hooked up to the transmission just like the starter is. Is it enclosed away from the transmission and full of gear oil?
I topped off the hydraulic fluid and it wasn't low at all, so I guess the reservoir isn't leaking.. I was a bit (completely) confused from the outset, and I figured the fluid would be low since it was taking a while to lift.
It does lift, though! 550 bushels or so on it, it lifts right up.
Other problem is it burns a huge amount of oil (~1qt per 50 miles), people we bought it from said recently overhauled, apparently we're suckers or they aren't very good at making cylinders round.
Mechanic said we probably don't want to rev it over 3000 because he doesn't know whether it's a 366 or 396 (some mixed pieces maybe), but both of those can get up to 5000... I know they have a long stroke but still. Course he put in a new carb (he said the Holley 4 barrel was "just old;" I told him to give me the Holley because a rebuild kit is only $50) and it doesn't have the vacuum governor.
EDIT: I just realized I put "I pretty much know how it works" at the wrong place; I don't know how any of the pumps or PTO works, I meant I already know what the answer is to fixing the leaking... or something. Who knows what I was trying to say.
