Might not be the thermostat. Could be a 40 year old crud filled radiator too.
If it's only puking coolant out of the overflow hose, and not actually getting "hot" via a temp gauge... you've filled up the radiator too full. Rigs with radiators without an over flow tank and just a hose that directs coolant to the ground should be filled until the radiator is about 2" to 3" from the top.
Every time you refill it to the top, it will blow coolant.
