Gear oil will not get that far. If an axle seal failed the gear oil would leak out at the open knuckle (by the axle shaft u-joint)
I have seen it. There could be a few reasons these come to mind off the top of my head:
wrong grease used
wheel bearings too tight
brakes dragging
riding the brakes down a long incline
