That said...I recently put a nasty 400 sbc where a 250 one resided and I want to bang gears. My truck is a swb 69 with an original bell housing, manual x member ect.
A tremec with overdrive would be ideal....too pricey.
A turbo glide or th350....for the price I might do without overdrive and grow to like a ratchet shifter.
How bad is an auto swap.... xmember changes? Resize/ balance a shaft? Anybody been where I'm at?
Thank you in advance.

If you are down to a bare frame the swap is a walk in the park. If cab and bed are still on it's tougher BUT time and determination can accomplish anything! For a trans like the TH350, the crossmember might stay in the same place. I have never worked with your trans, though, so break out the measuring tape to be sure. For the turbo 400 move the crossmember back to the rear set of holes. Driveshaft gets shortened by somewhere near 6 inches and you will need the kickdown set-up for either auto. I run a built TH400 with a manual valvebody backed up by a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Very nice as final drive ratio keeps RPMs to 2200 @ 70 mph with a 4:11 rear.
