I personnaly have proved that there is a disadvantage to sucking hot under hood air with open elements like those.

My 75 had a bunch of ping problems. I tried a bunch of things to get rid of these problems. In 75 they uses a air filiter assembly with a small diameter opening that pulled under hood air. I flipped the lid and the problem got better but still had the issue. I then swaped out to a mid 80's snorkle air cleaner assemble with the snorkle to the grill. BIG improvement and the MPG came up . Power came up as well.

The problem was lack of fuel because my down shift cable is the wrong one and would not alow full throttle It was starving for fuel.

What my informal test proved is the cooler air did help with the ping. So you can run more advance with cooler air and that stads to reason that you can make more power.

Right now I run K&N's but my buddy has me about convinced to go with the Redline's. They filter better then the K&N.
