Just going from memory, but I think my 73 and 76 seat backs had a more tapered edge on the top and was a little thinner than my 83. Early seats also did not tilt forward.
I think my upholsterer just cut out and replaced the driver's butt worn out area of my seat and then covered the whole thing with another layer of thicker, denser foam to even things out. Really, you can't tell it from factory and it seems a lot firmer and stronger than OEM.
Good auto upholsterers do this all day long and can knock out a rebuilt seat in a few hours. Around here a seat can be rebuilt and recovered for a few hundred dollars, but labor is cheap since we are close to the border and there is a lot of competition.
If you are a stickler for factory show quality OEM and count the stitches on the fabric, then that is a whole different story.
