Everybody has their own preference. When I did a S-10 frame 53 several years ago, I tried the wood brace but since I was going "rat-look" I didn't need to remove the doors, and with wing vents in the way I could never get it balanced right.
But, this worked perfect for me.... On the outer edges under the dash are two bolts on each side that are just an inch or so apart. I took those out, replaced temporarily with longer bolts to attach chain link which I attached ratchet straps to. On the back side, one ratchet strap to the 1.5" hole in the floor and a big washer under it.
