This an old school poor mans lift. It is also not a great idea. Yes the frames just stack and are welded together. At least partly welded. Twisting of the frame tears these thing up and then you get shifting.
To give the devil his due, after market lifts were not always available. Were there is a will there is a way. Safety standards didn't always exist either. Just ask Uncle Stumpy.
