Quick way to ID...
Short water pump will be so close to the timing cover that it may be touching, a long water pump you can stick your finger between the two.
also:
67-72: sbc for our years had the alternator on the driver side, they also had short water pumps.
73 and up: sbc had alternator on passenger side and had long water pumps.
