You're brave.
I'd pull the plugs and see if it cranks different. A '48 would be a 12V system and my guess is it would crank fast. Might want to check the voltage on the starter and the engine numbers to see what's there.
I'd also put new oil in and shoot oil in the plug holes and let it sit for a while.
