I thought that was designed so it would give the push button brigade something to point at at truck shows.
Truth is that I never made a study of it when I had door handles on my truck between 1973 and 81 and since 81 it hasn't had outside door handles nor stock latches.
I think that is the right spring that goes in the latch to return the handle but am not positive.
One thing you want to make sure of when you pull the handle out to get the latch out is that the square shank on the handle is straight and not twisted. I've seen a lot of twisted ones on trucks or doors that I have had. That is probably due to most of my stuff having come off farm trucks and the farm workers around here are pretty rough on stuff if it doesn't work smoothly.
