Cutting or drilling the rivets is a pain in the butt but more tedious than difficult. I think you can shove one end of the crossmember back and the other forward a bit to work it out of the frame.

Stick or automatic is strictly up to you and your son's personal preference. As in which setup do you feel will give you two the best driving experience. I've had both in my 48 over the years and the best thing about an automatic is your left leg doesn't get tired in traffic. Best thing about a stick is grinning while you wind through the gears but in traffic it can get a bit tedious if you have a stiff clutch.
