The back of the trans probably still has the yoke in it while you are missing the slip yoke and universal joint as seen in the lower left drawing that says universal joint passenger and truck.

If it's a stock seat in it have you had the cushion out? stuff like that often gets stuck under there when the trans gets worked on and the the trans cover gets taken out and the seat cushion gets pulled for easier access.
