This is 100% true. I went thru this when swapping from gmc caps to Chevy caps on my brother in laws 06 2500hd. We got a cheap set of OE Chevy caps from Craigslist and fought and fought with them. I finally got to comparing part numbers and there are 2 indeed different caps. I'm sure a belt sander would probably fix the issue pretty easy.
