I think what you're experiencing is simply rust dust building up within the drum. The next time it happens and you have access to an air hose, try blowing out the drum through the adjustment slot, or around the diameter on the edge of the backing plate, then drive it again and see if the squeal has diminished. In the "old" days the shoes were an asbestos compound that absorbed the dust, the newer none asbestos linings are not so forgiving.
