Let me ask, did you rotate the engine at all after the timing chain /gear install? they were properly aligned correct? if they were properly aligned in install and you did not rotate the crank then you should be pretty close.
So if the timing tab and the mark on the balancer are within a few degrees of each other and are correct for the engine then its probably still on or close to TDC.
