81-87 pumps look the same from the outside as the earlier pumps, but the 81-87 pumps are attached to the motor with a crimped metal base, not a screwed on metal base - at least that is the case with my 83. I guess you could retrofit a 73-80 pump to an 81-87, but I prefer my $15 solution. I have never had any luck with just replacing the plastic parts at the output end of the pump. As noted above, my only problem was a worn out pickup hose in the reservoir - I did not need a new pump, but I like my $15 pump better than the stock one.
