Over the years as GM (and all the others) used suppliers there would be differences in the guage sets. Maybe between model years or between the models themselves. Now the aftermarket tries to use as few senders as possible to cover all the differences. See this PDF document for a lot of information on the subject. It is a copy of some information from a Corvette forum.
