I notched my truck when I flipped the axle, and while I ~certainly~ carry loads (1000+lbs) in it, the pumpkin hits the bed floor before the axle tubes even hit the un-notched frame.

Don't notch it, and then after a while see if you actually needed to. You can always do it later.
