This is so true. In your case, I'd just tell them 2001 Suburban w/5.3 liter V8! With that, you should find a part number at least and then go from there.
Those kids behind the counter at Auto parts stores don't seem to know anything other than how to look up year/make/model and read what they see on the screen. The old geezers that really do know something are becoming a thing of the past as have reams of parts catalogs and diagrams that used to line the parts counter. I was a parts counter guy back in 1989 while attending college. The job required some skill and knowledge of auto parts/repair, ability to run a lathe to turn rotors and a certain amount of intelligence to not make a fool of yourself when helping out the corporate customers ( the ones who know their $hit and get extended the full discount ).
