All trucks from the 40s - 70s (and probably other years) had the metal tag that is being referred to. It is a model identification tag showing model # and GVW #s. The option codes that bpmcgee is talking about identified optional equipment that was added to the truck from the factory. It was for service referrence. 66 was the first year these were used. Here is a picture of one in a 72 model:
