With a sbc, my vote is it's someone's mud park cruiser built out of what was cheap, available and cool.
I agree an off-road recovery vehicle would be cool. Was actually watching YouTube and came across BSF Recovery team (?pretty close I think) who ran a cool squarebody 4x4 dual rear wheel wrecker that was surprisingly capable and often did exactly what you mention. Go into the woods wheeling, come out towing a jeep or other wheeler. I'd be happy with a normal 2wd street 67-72 wrecker though. Keep eyeing a 65 near me, wondering if the old man will ever let er go.

I don't know what it was built to do, just a suggestion that sounded better than it being useless. I know those parks use machinery, but could use this for most all vehicles. The tow boom and tower are plenty stout for most anything and the 1/2" boom cables are bigger than a winch cable. It could have a huge winch. You only need something bigger to recover a truck dead in the water. Most are just stuck and can help with getting themselves out. I had a '71 C/30 wrecker I sold a couple years ago. I want a C/60 for hauling light trucks
