The reproduction aluminum woodgrain inserts aren't too far off the mark - these use a pinstripe of paint where the originals have bare exposed metal but otherwise look the part. I'd go that route before I'd try to refurbish an OEM set. Cheyenne Superman sells refurbished inserts on eBay that are also nice.
Good buy on the console.
