Yep, it's an ego thing. In my town, I am that guy.
For me it is the craftsmanship of the build. I enjoy the engineering involved in updating old U.S. steel into something that can be driven across the country at a moments notice, driven to work daily and still look cool in the progress. When you build one from the ground up or do a bunch of major upgrades there is a sense of satisfaction which can't be bought.
