Cylinders numbered 1, 3, 5, 7 down the left and 2, 4, 6, 8 down the right?
I once changed heads on a Mercedes 6 cyl and had no compression but I don't think that is a possibility with yours. You should be able to tell cranking it over.
Got enough advance on that HEI unit?
Try some new premium fuel?
