Fuel guage problem(probably my fault)

So a couple years ago I did a 4x4 conversion on my 88 Suburban. At the same time I yanked the stock TBI engine and trans and swapped a carburated 350 out of my 4x4 parts truck. Well when it came time to "hot wire" the in tank fuel pump I accidently put power to the wire for the guage instead of the pump. Once I realized the pump wasnt running I switched it and spliced the guage wire back together. Now this burb had a perfectly good working fuel guage before I tore it down and rebuilt it, but since the rebuild the guage does what ever it wants. It usually stays at the 1/4 tank mark but will occasionally decide it is going to go to empty or half tank with no real reason to move.... So my question is, did I hurt something in the sender when I put power to it or did I lose my operational guage when I got rid of the TBI?
