Can you convert a 2wd frame to a 4wd?

And what is involved with converting a 700r4 from a 2wd to a 4wd tranny?

I have a 2wd 1980, and I want to convert it to 4x4 with parts from a mid 80's diesel crewcab one ton 4x4...
