I bought a "NUTSERT" tool off of a Mac Tool dealer years ago, just for this sort of thing. As stated above, it looks like a round barrel with threads inside. Drill out the old nut( you should be able to see what size pretty easy), and install another with this tool. It operates almost just like a rivet gun. I'm sure there's others out there, just don't know them by name.
