I had several issues with my water pump. I have a '69 307 V8, and switched from a long pump (which fit fine) to a short pump, to accommodate Alt brackets.

From what I was told was there is no performance difference between stock water pumps. There is a 1 3/8" length difference between the pumps. (based on the image below)

What I learned is that the pump you choose will change what pulleys and Alt brackets you use, but that's all.

If you want a long pump, tell the parts person you want a pump for a 74-75 small block chevy. The missing space of no fan should allow enough room for the electric fan.
