FWIW, a tko600 w/4.10's (2.87 x 4.10 = 11.76 SLR) will be the close to the same as a tko 500 w/3.73's (3.27 x 3.73 = 12.19 SLR) Anyway, the 500 is more for people that already had a higher geared rearend and still wanted OD, like 3.55 and up without having to change to lower rearend gears. One of the trucks I had the TKO500/sbc in one was part work truck/part hot rod and it had 3.73's - I used it to pull with, sometimes up to 7000#, no problem - the lower first gear was great. It's definitely not like an SM465 low gear or anything. I kinda liked it, you could almost idle off the clutch in 1st and roll out, and it would get 4200# out of the hole pretty well when you got into it.
I've got a 1966 K14 Burb with a bench seat and 4 speed and want to swap in a TKO600 5 speed tranny. I have a 327 and have a divorced transfer case. My question is: what position should the shifter be in? Can the 4WD shifter knob remain in the same stock position or does the new bigger TKO 600 require the 4WD shifter to be repositioned? I'm looking for a stock look inside the cab. If anyone has done this swap, I'd like to see pics inside the cab of the floor area. Thanks!
