Install does make a big difference, if the liner separates at an edge it will let water in and hold it there. Not good.
I have a tailgate that I'm patching the inside bottom of because of that. It looked really solid until I started peeling the liner off. The areas where the the liner held in moisture were rotted thru. The areas where it was still sticking were rock solid. Bad prep damaged what was a rust free surface. It looked like they lined it over primer-covered single stage paint.
