On the 80's fullsize cars, the license plate covered teh filler, but then again, the neck ended about 1/2 way up the tailgate (if you were to use it on a truck). You'd have to either seriously lower the gas tank or seriously raise the filler neck and make it impractical. Something I have heard about is to take a rear-exiting tank like that and to cut the neck off and weld it straight up so the filler is in the bed just in front of the gate.
