Those were some of my concerns as well. But I got to thinking, what if you use the R/1 gear. This would mean you would have to pull back on the shifter when you want to change gears. Once you pull back and put it in drive or reverse, when let go it would stay in that gear until you pull back again to move it. This would eliminate possible accidental gear changes. The only issue I can think of is you may loose where the shifter is in the cycle. I may experiment.
