It's a common failure mode for these newer batteries. Or, do you have an HEI? If not, the coil power wire from the starter (the one on the "R" terminal) could be touching the main post on the starter. Though that usually shows up when you shut the engine off, and it doesn't stop running. Since you were in the system there, it's something to check.
