A number of years ago I had a 66 corvette with a 327. When I got it, it worked OK, unless you got on it. Then about haflway thru third gear it would just die. Pull over to the side, crank for a few seconds on it was OK again. Turned out that the pivot lever for the fuel pump had fallen out. The lever then moved out of position, but only a little bit as it ran into the inside wall of the pump body. This resulted in it getting about a third of the intended stroke on the lever. So long as there wasn't much demand, it could keep up, but when you started burning some fuel it couldn't.
