It's not a roll/cotter pin. From the guy's description it's just a straight piece of round metal about 2 1/2 inches long. Looks like it passes through the part of the handle that has the lock on it, then is placed in the pivot point of the part on the tailgate. It's then held in place with 2 screws. It's not really visible once installed, which is why I thought a nail might work.
