Re: 2500hd or Suburban 2500
The GMT800 2500HD has a 4L80E and likely has a NV263 or NV261 transfer case.
The 2000 and later GMT400 & GMT800 Suburban can have one of the lighter duty 4L60E variants... 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E, 4L75E along with the possibility of an Autotrac II transfer case. The Suburban could have the NV261 or NV263 xfer case but I'm not sure that GM gave the option of the 4L80E in the Suburban.
What are you towing and how much stuff do you haul around?
