I would try Saxart's idea. How much have you cleaned off that gearbox?
Maybe if you got it very clean, things might just fit.
Spray it with degreaser, then taxi over to the $1.50 carwash and zap it good. Wear your wetsuit. Clean trucks run better. Plus you'll be dropping off 20 to 50 lbs of caliche.
For once, I'm ahead of you! Been to all the car washes around here that *might* have hot water and high pressure, numerous times, even when the transmission tunnel was off I did from inside the cab. I got a can of the degreaser to spray on before going again. It's cleaner than 99% of the vehicles on the road. LOL Also costs $1.75 or $2.00 up here. I should take more time to clean out the plug, with a toothpick and carb cleaner.
