Yep, I have two reproduction tags and the letter stamps to put the VIN which is what I will be doing, along with my original Pink slip and registration slip from 1973, we will see. I have thought about doing one of the vin tags and then aging it with some "patina" so it looks original. But I don't want to push it. I will just have to deal with it like it's a "home built" I guess.

Federal regulations allow the owner or authorized entity to remove and replace the VIN tag when reasonably necessary for restoration. Knowing that, you may proceed without bothering to inform the tyrannical drones at the DMV, who would be completely flummoxed and handle it with an automatic rejection:

18 U.S. Code § 511. Altering or removing motor vehicle identification numbers:

(1) Subsection (a) of this section does not apply to a removal, obliteration, tampering, or alteration by a person specified in paragraph (2) of this subsection (unless such person knows that the vehicle or part involved is stolen).

(B) a person who repairs such vehicle or part, if the removal, obliteration, tampering, or alteration is reasonably necessary for the repair;
