They get a lot of pressure from a foot being pushed on them, so they are really tight so as to not slip off at the wrong moment. I did mine without any lube starting at the bottom, since they taper out as they go up. It wasn't any fun. I think that the factory uses the same lube that is used to mount tires on the rim.
